I was first attracted to this alstromeria (common name Peruvian Lily) in a garden at a B&B in the Loire Valley in France. And then I saw it again in the Royal Horticultural Society’s garden, Wisley, outside of London. I visited there with Fergus Garret, my friend and head gardener at Great Dixter, when he went there to report on flower trials. I knew I had to find it! Which I did, online with the Burpee Company. It is so attractive not only because of the bright colors in the flowers, but also because it has dark green leaves. This variety is called Indian Summer. Alstromerias are a great cut flower and can last up to 2 weeks in a vase.
